Our World of Water; Beatrice Hollyer;   (Zadie Smith Foreword); 2009; Frances Lincoln Children's Books

A 'serious' book for children - opening essay by Zadie Smith

"Wherever we live in the world - whether our country is rich or poor - water is vital to our survival on this planet. This book follows the daily lives of six children from Peru, Mauritania, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Tajikistan and California and explores what water means to them. Where does it come from? How do they use it? With the growing threat of floods and droughts occurring throughout the world due to global warming, this book invites discussion on these topics as well as documenting the ways different countries and cultures value this most precious of our planet's natural resources." From one of the comments by Kirsten G. Cutler (2010)

Zadie Smith writes in her forward to this beautiful photo-essay that many people "forget what a miracle water is. We forget that it supports everything that lives..." She asks the reader to give some careful thought to the stories of the children in this book who demonstrate how valuable water truly is for all of us.
