Deep Water; The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst

Deep Water; The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst

The Projection of the Adventure Myth onto Water is always problematic. The territory is ungoverned.
This is a haunting tale of social pressure, stiff upper lips and denial. Or it is a story about taking responsibility, daring to fail, and faith in a better humanity and freedom of thought? You decide!
Eight years ago now, we worked on this film, which is a continuing and lasting paradigm for that propensity of the ocean to command all and refuse to be contained.
Crowhurst's faked logbooks told a story of a circumnavigation, and he 'created' his voyage, too, through radio signals transmitted to specific stations in oceans where he was physically absent.
Many of us who dwell on the water obey this command, and set off in doubt with so much to risk and all to gain. We try to ignore perennial 'fender-kickers' at the dock who tell us 'She'll Never Float', and to make the right decision about 'readiness', which can often be the decision between life and death.
